About
This art curriculum was created in 2014 by the dynamic team of Tracy Young and Shauna Hruby, both parents of children at Oak Ridge Elementary and regular classroom art volunteers. Tracy, with a BA in Fine Arts from Westmont College (and a teaching credential that allows her to routinely substitute at the elementary level), and Shauna, with an MA in Art History from UC Riverside (also adjunct faculty in Art History at Mt. San Antonio College), would frequently discuss ways of improving the outdated Picture Person program in use at Oak Ridge. After an unfortunate episode of vandalism in the spring of 2014 caused damage to the Picture Person room, the two art lovers figured it was the perfect time to create a new program.
Taking cues from teacher requests, and learning from past project successes and failures, Tracy and Shauna gathered ideas from their respective teaching experiences and then scoured the web (including Pinterest - yay!) for inspiration of art projects that fit their new curriculum, especially projects that allowed the students to do most of the creating, within one monthly art session, and could be tied in to famous art examples. The duo then tweaked the lessons to fit their specific needs, and this art curriculum was born!
